Band Info
Junk Shop Star is instrumental soundtrack music for your own headfilms. Crafted by hand and certified free of MIDI, programming or sampling, these organic soundscapes evoke the spirit of Eno, Neu & Tortoise. Music without words is like a land without frontiers.
Junk Shop Star was born out of a desire to create “Music for Headfilms”. Junk Shop Star has long admired the music of Brian Eno, particularly the sublime “Music for Films” and the Fripp/Eno collaboration “Evening Star”.
Junk Shop Star is not sure why instrumental music is such a passion, but suspects it is because the moment words are added to music the context and possibilities are limited by the language and sometime the method of delivery. Music without words is like a land without frontiers. The possibilities for headtravel within the music are endless.
Junk Shop Star developed abiding passions for the instrumental music of German experimentalists Can, Neu, Faust and Popul Vuh, then expanded horizons to the desert soundtracks of the likes of Calexico and Friends of Dean Martinez, then via Chicago and the Thrill Jockey team of Tortoise, and the lovely Brokeback, and back home to Dunedin, New Zealand through the ocean-inspired instrumentals featured on David Kilgour’s albums.
All Junk Shop Star recordings are certified free of MIDI, programming, sampling or software. Everything is played by hand in real time (and sometimes “reel” time too, which might be halfspeed and/or backwards) hence the organic “looseness” sometimes evident to those who listen closely. It is very human music, evolving from idea to conclusion without a script, errors honoured as hidden intentions.
